Welcome to Jimmy Cooks Stuff!
Hey folks! My name is James Nordlund. I am a writer, musician, and, most importantly as it pertains to the blog you are currently checking out, a cook. As someone who is inclined to use my knowledge of food and cooking methods to be inventive in my recipes and open to learning new things in the culinary world, I am personally not much of an advocate of the mass hysteria in using platforms such as Pinterest to decide what to cook. That said, this is only because I feel comfortable in my abilities to do things my way in the kitchen and of course I will use such apps/sites to get ideas for my own creations. I also understand that not everyone has had as much time to hone their craft as I have, so I do not look down on such activity. In this light, I decided if you can't beat them, join them! So I will be using this blog to get my food and recipes out there for You to either use verbatim or, as I would, general guidelines for You to make your own variant creations!
A little bit about my journey as a cook:
Braised Beef Short Rib Pizziola |
When my parents divorced in my early teens, my mom left and my brothers and I stayed at home with my dad. Without my mom to cook the meals we mostly ate Hamburger Helper, Top Ramen, Kraft mac and cheese, canned soup, etc. I became bored with this cycle of junk food and began attempting to cook the things I wanted to eat. A healthy dose of reading a plethora of cook books, watching the Food Network religiously, and learning through trial and error, I became a pretty accomplished home cook, able to whip up nearly anything I set my mind to.
Skipping ahead, at 26 I returned to school to pursue a degree in writing. After receiving my Associates degree I began attending the University of Washington Tacoma to acquire a Bachelor of Arts in Writing Studies. I also began working as a dish washer/prep cook at the local Roadhouse Bar and Grill in Puyallup. Within two years, under the tutelage of one of the cooks there, I became the go to guy to fill in as cook on shifts when someone was sick or lying to get time off. After receiving my degree, without the weight of rigorous study to hold me back, I moved up to be a full time cook--a position I currently still hold.
